Set the course for North!

The Sporades are a cluster of eleven islands in the north Aegean which boast a myriad of crystalline bays, easy mooring and mesmerising landscapes. The four inhabited islands in the group; Skyros, Skiathos, Skopelos and Alonnisos, are prime hubs for yachting enthusiasts because of their picturesque charm, abundance of coastal coves and natural beauty. Reaching the area via the straits of Evia, the Sporades are also a great springboard from which to explore the northeastern territory of the Aegean with the largest marinas in the area; those of Aretsou in Thessaloniki and Porto Karras and Porto Sani in Halkidiki.

The Island Breeze

Skiathos is the main harbour from which to explore the waters surrounding the other islands while enjoying the stunning emerald sea and its inviting golden beaches. A popular destination for snorkellers and divers, the Sporades are also home to the endangered Mediterranean Monk Seal and the National Marine Park of Alonnisos. Ideal for yachting enthusiasts because of the playful Meltemi wind throughout the summer, the region provides challenging but exhilarating sailing conditions with sheltered seas on the southern island coasts.

Secrets of the Sporades

The best kept Sporadic secrets for the ultimate yachting experience include the islet of Kyra Panagia or ‘Pelagos’, with its inhabitants of goats and a handful of monks. Two small inlets provide the perfect anchorage for a tranquil stay over. About eighteen nautical miles from Alonnisos lies the southerly island of Skantzoura, a paradise for those seeking aquamarine coves and complete escapism. Peristeri, also known as Aspro or Xero, is a dry, uninhabited islet with a safe harbour for mooring once you have explored its exquisite little bays and beaches.

Enjoying lovely warm summers and temperatures reaching up to 35°C in July and August, the Sporades are also ideal for cruising in May or October, when the average temperature ranges from 23-25°C. In fact, the region is a superb destination for all seasons!

8th Mediterranean Yacht Show

Having emerged as one of the premier events for industry professionals, the 8th Mediterranean Yacht Show (MEDYS) turned the international spotlight onto Greece once again, as the host of the world’s largest crewed yacht charter show.

It is worth noting that yachts measuring 24 meters and above in length have the right to participate in the exhibition, making the MEDYS the only sector event of similar scope in Greece that is exclusively addressed to the upper segment of luxury yachting. At this year's Show, 92 yachts with a cumulative LOA of 3.5 kilometers were present, with a waiting list (due to limited space in the port of Nafplion) that surpassed the numbers of every previous year. In order to fully grasp the MEDYS’ size, it is worth considering that the number of participating yachts far exceeded that of comparable shows. Confirming the event's success is, among others, the significantly larger presence of industry professionals from all over the world, with more than 750 participants from 31 countries.

Yachting tourism attracts an increasing number of visitors to Greece and MEDYS is the perfect occasion to highlight the region as one of the top yachting destinations globally. The show owes its success to the large number of registered yachts, the great turn-out of industry professionals from all corners of the globe and the contribution of the local CAs. It is organized each year by GYA under the auspices of the Hellenic Ministry of Tourism and with the kind support of the Municipality of Nafplion.
